- Your disk space "real estate" is one of the most important (and costly)
- areas of your PC system. The software that makes your PC a useful and
- timesaving device resides here. As time marches on, your need for
- different software and storage change. On shared systems and local area
- networks where there are multiple drives and drive partitions that
- often hold an abundance of software, it is extra important to keep tabs
- on how much of your disk drive storage space is being utilized.
-
-
- Features of Quick See:
-
- * Quick See allows you to quickly get a view of the relative space
- usage on your system's disk drives in easy to read formats.
-
- * The actual byte counts calculated from the disk drives' file
- allocation tables also displayed for more exacting needs.
-
- * The QSEE report generator can create a report of every drive found on
- your system on disk or to your printer.
-
- * When in Auto Mode, the program can continually monitor all drives
- available to a given system.
-
- * QSEE can be set warn you when any drive reaches a certain level of
- used storage space.
-
- Features new to version 2.20:
-
- * QSEE may be started in "quiet" mode by following QSEE with a 'q' or a
- 'Q' at the DOS prompt upon startup. This will start the program with
- the Effects option OFF.
-
- * The Auto-mode delay time may now be changed by pressing F5. Formerly
- fixed at 10 seconds, the delay now can be set from 1 to 99 seconds.

-
-
- There are 6 files in the QSEE220 archive:
-
- File Purpose
- ------------ -----------------------------------------------------
- QSEE.EXE ....... QSEE main executable file.
- QSFILES.LST .... List of QSEE v2.20 files.
- QSEE220.DOC .... Manual for QSEE v2.20 (this file).
- QSEEFORM.DOC ... Blank registration order form.
- RFDIR.EXE ...... A useful companion utility from RBK Software.
- RFD110.DOC ..... Documentation for the RFDIR program.
-
-
- FILES created by QSEE v2.20 program:
-
- File Purpose
- ------------ -----------------------------------------------------
- QSEE.RPT........ On-disk report file.
- QSEE.BAK........ On-disk report file backup.
-
-
- To use Quick See, the above files should be in the current directory or
- copied to a directory found in your search path. The search path is
- defined by the PATH statement, usually placed in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

-
-
- At the DOS prompt type: QSEE [q|Q] (followed by Enter)
-
- The optional 'q' or 'Q' will start the program in "quiet" mode.
- You will see that the Effects option has been set to 'OFF' when started
- with the 'q' parameter.
-
- What happens:
-
- The program will scan the system building a drive list of all floppy and
- hard drives found. The existence of the drive is verified by performing
- a look at the File Allocation Table (FAT) of the particular drive the
- program is seeking. QSEE v2.20 is capable of reading and storing in
- memory the FAT information of as many as 26 drives (A-Z).
-
- Quick See will then go back to the default drive, re-read it's FAT and
- display the results found for your default drive.
-
- At this point you may hear two hi-pitched beeps and the "Capacity
- Warning" message may appear in the center of your screen. This indicates
- that your used disk space exceeds 90% of the total storage space
- available on that drive. The "Capacity Warning" defaults to 90% upon
- program startup can be easily changed to suit your needs. See "Quick See
- Commands" pp.4, for details on changing this value.
-
- A list of all drives found is then displayed on the bottom line of the
- screen. An arrow above the letter of your default drive will appear in
- the bottom left corner of the screen.
-
- The program will then be ready to take commands. The command box
- displayed in the center of the screen provides a list of "Hot-Keys" for
- adjusting the program's parameters and to pop-up the reporting window.

-
- F1 - Effects toggle
-
- 'Effects' refers to the sound and the method in which the bar graph is
- displayed. The effects may be toggled as desired. When the effects are
- toggled OFF, the display is extremely fast and no sound is heard. Please
- note that this will not suppress the sound made by the Capacity Warning
- feature. Quick See can be started with the Effects 'OFF' by adding the
- quiet parameter following QSEE at the DOS prompt. (QSEE q -or- QSEE Q)
-
-
-
- F2 - Automode
-
- Pressing F2 will toggle Quick See's automatic mode. Automode will start
- a scan of all the FIXED DISKS on a system with one keystroke. QSEE will
- begin with the first fixed disk and display the results found. After
- pausing ten seconds, the next fixed disk is displayed and so on...
- When the last fixed disk is presented, QSEE recycles back to the first
- fixed disk and will continued until the ESC key is pressed.
-
- This feature is particularly useful on LANs or on systems where there
- are multiple fixed disks present. QSEE can perform as an effective drive
- monitoring tool.
-
- The default ten second delay time can be changed via the F5 key (see
- below). The Effects, Capacity Warning, and Delay Time settings are not
- accessible during Automode and should be set prior to activating.
-
-
-
- F3 - Capacity Warning
-
- As QSEE performs it's calculations, it compares the percent of used disk
- space against the Capacity Warning level. If it is equal to or greater
- than the Capacity Warning level, two hi-pitched tones will sound and the
- message "Capacity Warning" in red will appear in the center of the
- screen. Press F3 to change the the percent used level (1-99%).
-
-
-
- F4 - Report / Print
-
- Pressing F4 invokes the report generator. A pop-up menu appears with 3
- options. You may choose to produce a singular drive report, a report
- including all drives, or to quit. The next option, assuming a reporting
- option has been chosen, allows you to decide where the report output is
- to be directed. The report can be either written to a disk file or
- directly to a printer.
-

-
- -4-
-
-
-
-
-
- Q U I C K S E E C O M M A N D S (c o n t ' d)
-
-
-
-
- If the disk file option is chosen, QSEE looks for an existing backup
- file and if found deletes it. Next, if there is an existing report file,
- it renames that to a backup file. It then writes the new report file.
- (See "Setup" pp.2 or QSFILES.LST more information)
-
-
-
- F5 - Delay Time
-
- To change to amount of time Quick See pauses between displaying drives
- in Automode, use this option. When F5 is pressed, you will be prompted
- to enter a new pause value between 1-99 seconds. This new pause time
- will be valid the next time the program enters Automode.
-
-
-
- [driveletter]
-
- To instantly view the storage use on any drive listed in the drive list,
- press the letter of the drive to update the screen.
-
-
-
- ESC
-
- Pressing ESC will exit the program.
- (If QSEE is in Automode, pressing ESC will terminate Automode, pressing
- ESC a second time will then terminate the program.)
